Missed…and used.
Original post: Dinner…?
How about we take a quick look at a mistake this week? Actually, a combination of mistake and selection.
The image above isn’t what I wanted it to be. But it’s a case of seeing the right picture too late, or not reacting quickly enough, or both. I can’t fault the camera because it happened much too quickly—here’s the preceding shot:
As you can see I’m focussed on the blade when Anaïs suddenly removes the top of the mandoline and I’m just not fast enough: I’ve moved the focus point backwards, hoping to frame Jacob’s knife with this new “interference”...but nope.
It’s a shame too because that triangle would’ve been pretty cool.
As for selection: image #1 is better but it lacks action. And within the flow of the story, I felt it needed something more dynamic, even if the capture wasn’t as well executed.

A few words RE shooting this scene: I received an email about the story, from someone just beginning his photographic journey, wondering how to set-up the camera for this kind of situation (1). It’s easy to forget we didn’t know any of this at one point and it might be worth mentioning from time to time.
So here goes. I shoot most “documentary” images using he following config:
Aperture priority.
Auto ISO - default sensitivity at lowest possible value, max at either 6400 or 12800 (if the camera goes there it needed to), min shutter speed 1/100 or 1/125.
Ride the aperture ring for DOF.
Ride Exp. Comp. dial for exposure control.
For reference: this series ranged from ISO 640 to ISO 6400; shutter speeds 1/50s to 1/100s. Most of it shot at or around f/2.8.
Yes, I did reply with the info :)
