The blue dark endless eye
We were on the front porch from 2:15 until well after the end of totality, around 3:45. What's astonishing is how fast it happens, how everything changes, in just a few minutes. And then it's over, as soon as it began. But within those moments, seeing the sun as a shining black disk, the wisps of the corona dancing as if caught in a cosmic breeze, you're faced with awe in its purest form. An experience so fully outside of our normal frame of reference that it almost lacks solidity.
The kids were acting silly, borderline jaded at times...and then the world dimmed. We heard people cheering, from nowhere and everywhere. You can't fight the power of an event this immense. It's like the hand of god coming down. Venus appeared, and Héloïse kept repeating there's a star, there's a star!
We stood there, transfixed
under the blue dark endless eye.
