As Is
I gave myself a challenge: shoot quickly, without thinking. Then apply an EXP 77 style in Capture One, order and export. No tweaking, no adjustments whatsoever—not even to the forced crop (I didn’t shoot square in-camera). Ok, I actually cheated with the cropping on image 7 (something was bugging me too much)…but everything else is just one-click.
Why? First, to mimic how I used to shoot as a kid, and how I saw our own kids shoot, whenever I’d lend them a camera: they’d walk around the house, point at whatever struck their fancy, and then stop a few minutes later. No concerns about sharpness or focus or relevance. They had seen and they had recorded. Secondly, to almost remove post from the equation, accepting whatever roll of the dice.
An exercise in letting go.
I used the small EX-F8 flash on my X-Pro3, which contributed to the instant look and randomness of the experience. The flash inexplicably refused to shoot TTL, so I switched to manual in order to drop the power—I’ll have to investigate this.
