The weekend & the shot

Japanese efficiency. I sit in the waiting room for the required fifteen minutes of observation, but my mind is back in Tokyo Station, watching trains come and go like clockwork, mesmerized. My appointment was at 2:15 PM and I swear the needle pierced my skin to the very second. Bullet train.

I sit and watch people moving between checkpoints in one endless, steady and effortless stream. Nurses and volunteers, eyes smiling despite their workload. I watch humanity coming together at last, until I’m finally told to leave. “Thank you”, I say.
I’ve rarely meant it so much.

It’s a long weekend here, our unofficial launch to summer. A few days to work on our backyard, to mow the lawn, clean the pool and kickstart the garden.

Hope does spring eternal, after all.
