Quarantine Day 01
We knew it would hit close to home…eventually. We never expected it to be this fast. We received an email from health services last night, informing us that Jacob had been in “close contact” with a confirmed case of COVID-19. We know it’s not friend but it is someone with whom he shared classes. Which means he’s officially quarantined until march 26...and we are too, by extension.
We’re all in unchartered territory, watching the news, trying to figure out the best way to navigate it all. Here in Quebec, schools are closed and the government has imposed a “sanitary emergency”—bars, theatres, gyms...all non-essential gathering places have been shut down. Stores now operate on limited hours. This is not insurmountable, but it is serious. Which is probably THE most important bit of information to absorb: take this seriously. The only way to fight back is to follow guidelines and to isolate ourselves as much as possible to avoid unintentional transmission. I see people at airports, leaving on vacation and frankly, I despair at the stupidity of the human race. It may be boring. It may temporarily transform our days into slow drips, sloth like and without aim.
But we will survive boredom.
...
As you may have guessed from the title, I’ll be keeping a journal of sorts during all of this. Time, after all, is an opportunity. And this blog is a little like a window I can keep open—an influx of oxygen in the musty air.
Jacob is fine btw. No symptoms at all. There’s a form we need to fill out every day to monitor his health but otherwise, life hasn’t drastically changed from two days ago. We had already planned on isolating for the next couple of weeks and were ready for it. We did cancel work on a new bathroom downstairs to avoid potentially infecting anyone else. At least the dig was over and the plumbing was done. I can take the plastic off my gear and computer...until we reboot.
One caveat: expect a lot of indoors and neighbourhood pictures for a little while.
Be safe.
