Midsummer Catch-Up

How's summer treating you so far folks? I'm back from a couple of weeks off. A lot of reading, outdoor work (our pool is finally gone–long story), and a trip to the Eastern Townships, playing tourists in our own backyard. Slow, mellow, mainly introspective. My default mode lately, when I manage to pry my attention away from reality for a second or two.

It's 7:35 AM now, and there's a cup of coffee on the table next to me. A few moments ago I noticed the sun timidly kissing the leaves of a recent transplant—a hosta, planted next to a boulder, next to a maple tree. The boulder's new to this spot too. I dug it up from the side of our house several weeks ago, just before school ended. I'd decided I could do this on my own, no sweat.

Rude. Awakening.

I found myself painstakingly wiggling it inch by inch with a crowbar, using other stones as wedges just to lift it out of its hole. Couldn't imagine the end of it. I eventually moved it far enough to clear the corner of our deck and roll the darned thing using its own momentum as leverage, but I spent well over an hour just on those first eight-ten feet. A lot of sweat and humble pie it turns out. Rocks are stupid heavy.

Hold on—let me step out and grab a picture...

This is my favourite light of the day I think. Gentle and warm and bathed in fleeting silence.
Gone already as I type this.

A quick reminder to check out our new KAGE "season" if you're looking for stories and images during your holidays. We made it a point to just get back in the saddle and avoid overthinking, but man...my friends keep me bloody humble. One essay a week, every Thursday.

Later :)
