The Chain

The concept of streaks—from a Greek philosopher, two-thousand years ago. Humans have been human for an awfully long time.

I've railed about this subject before, but perhaps I've had it all wrong: a streak should be approached as faillible, and accepted as faillible. I should keep one going while confident in the knowledge that it will end, and it doesn't matter. This is hard, because most of us aren't built that way at all (I'm not): we win, or we lose, we succeed, or we fail. The world forces us into binary choices. And streaks are often framed that way too, as a competition with ourselves, a performance to maintain at all costs.

But they may in fact teach us about letting go, if we dismiss the guilt and accept to simply begin again.

The goal isn't the chain—it's the links. The links are the win.
They always add up, no matter what.

Greenery (mostly), from this morning’s walk…
