Remnants
I love the holidays—the cheesy songs, the glitz and glitter, that strange, irrational sense of being on the cusp of something magical. Even with the kids now older, even with Omicron laying waste to all the plans we’d made and locking us in our home again…it worked, somehow.
Every year I feel a pang of sadness in the days leading up to January 1st: the end is palpable at this point, and what seemed endless is now waning. I hate to see it all fade away, and dread taking down the trees and lights and Christmas knick-knacks. But it always shifts, quickly, and I woke up on January 2nd not just ready, but longing to get our house back to normal. Cynthia felt the same so, we did, and today there’s a certain freshness in the air.
The girls will be back in school on Thursday—remotely, until at least the 17th. Jacob starts his new semester later, so hopefully this new wave will be under control by then. I leave you with the last images of 2021, for which I fired up the old X-Pro1 and shot straight to black and white. What the hell.
Something old.
Something new.
Happy New Year folks.
