I gave a 1:1 workshop yesterday—lovely time (cold) and it was great to be out on the streets again. But mostly I’ve been consumed by a music project lately, one of those things you only hide away from at the risk of...implosion. It’s another Horse Machine album but in a very different vibe. Odder? More subdued? I lack any kind of perspective at this point so I shouldn’t even begin to try. Another January release in all likelihood. Anyhoo…here’s some scattershot stuff before heading into the weekend.
Photo Life and Photo Solution
I’ve had the great fortune of working with the gang at Photo Life for the past...3-4 years? I’m really bad at keeping track. And every article I write gets translated for the French Photo Solution magazine as well. In the latest issue I take a look at the way street photography has come under attack due to privacy laws in various locations. The article is called Rise of the Shadow World and it’s on newsstands now. Plus: I got the Photo Solution cover this month :))
Kevin and Neale
I don’t listen to enough podcasts. I really should because the amount of amazing content out there is just insane. One such gem is from none other than my buddy Kevin Mullins and Mr. ex-BBC radio voice himself, photographer Neale James. It’s called The Fujicast but really it’s about photography, period. And it’s the relationship between those two guys that’s addictive—they’re very good friends and it shines through on every show. In fact, the banter you hear is exactly what those two sound like outside the recording booth. It’s. Just. Unbearable.
The Fujicast is already at episode 43 and to give you a clue, this latest one features Nelson Mandela’s personal photographer. It ain't just about dials and buttons. Highly recommended.
One more thing: if you’re just starting out with the show please check out the very first minutes of the very first episode. I was sitting in that car. It happened. It involves Kevin’s lovely wife Gemma and it’s probably the best opening 30 seconds of a new podcast, ever. I may have mentioned this before…but it’s that good.
Fujigirl
Last but absolutely NOT least (typo fixed—in case you read previous version): Mindy Tan—aka Fujigirl.
Full disclaimer: I like Mindy. We’ve known each other for years, spent some time together last summer on Fujifilm’s Camera Punks project (with Palle Schulz and Francis Bellefeuille), where I apparently did some pretty bad kayaking (not going there)...I just think the world of her and her work. Still, all personal feelings aside, if you haven't' checked out the Youtube series she’s producing for Fujifilm Singapore you’re missing out. She has a knack for summarizing photography subjects and transforming even basic technical matters into something interesting. It’s the infusion of culture, personal views and documentary approach that sells it for me and I doubt you’ll come out disappointed. Every video is a short glimpse into the world she inhabits and how she approaches various subjects. Best recommendation I can think of? I want to pick up a camera after every episode.
