At summer's end

At summer's end we laughed and laughed. We watched carnival crowds melt away in pools of ice cream and candy, storming overgrown balloons and grasping at the sun.
We watched hordes running on shadow's edge in a prolonged scream, furious at the approaching nightfall. They longed for eternity but we knew the truth.

At summer's end we turned to the west
as silence fell on our darkened eyes.
