No big editorials today, and I apologize in advance for the first story below: I just noticed a few moments ago that it's stuck behind a paywall. I get access to several publications through Apple News, and The Atlantic is one of them—which accounts for the blind spot.

But if you do get a chance to read it, I think it's a thought-provoking piece that highlights the power of words, and images, on our perception of reality. How easily it can be distorted, either through selection, or outright bias—and in the case of Appalachia, across several decades (it's worth following the provided links in the article).

Stacy Kranitz's work is steeped in gray areas, blurred edges, and nuances. The resulting message isn't necessarily pretty, or even clear, but in a world of extremes it's definitely refreshing.

As for Peter Turnley's images and account of Ukraine in the first days of the war...the only word that comes to mind is necessary.
