Have you ever heard of manageitis? I spent most of my morning trying to write an iOS shortcut that would tie Craft, Things and my calendar together with one tap. Why? For speed... I think? To create a simpler workflow? The word manageitis doesn't exist but if it did, this would make a perfect example. Adding complications in a quest for simplicity. In other words, managing tasks to death. I get a kick out of it—which is a big part of the problem. But this time the futility of the endeavour sunk in. Saving a few seconds once in a while isn’t worth the hours lost (1). At the end of it, with lunchtime fast approaching, I wrote SIMPLIFY in my notebook and closed it. There was a world before digital automation and folks still Got Things Done. I can live with a manual workflow. ... Which isn’t to say we should never re-examine our process: note-taking apps are all the rage right now but beyond the hype, there’s a new breed of tools out there that can effectively alter the way we work for the better. For me, it’s Craft. And it’s not just the design philosophy behind it, but the fact that it potentially replaces many parts in my everyday machinery...with something simpler, more efficient. I just need to keep away from adding any friction. And speaking of friction, I recently posted a members video explaining my storage/backup setup. But I made a small change this week: instead of storing my 2021 master images to an external RAID drive (along with every previous year), I’ve decided to keep it on my MacBook Air. Because mobility is addictive and having to plug the Air into a hub to access current original files in Capture One—that was friction. So, simplicity... if I can keep it.
