With WWDC now officially over we're seeing quite a few distilled reactions to the Vision Pro, from people who had a chance to experience it first hand. What I find most interesting about these accounts is the near unanimous sense of having seen the future, the obvious elation most have felt, but also the uncertainty and wariness. It sounds transformative to the point of being difficult to process—which is both thrilling and maybe a little scary.

The most eloquent article I've read so far comes—unsurprisingly—from Federico Viticci: Apple Vision Pro: A Watershed Moment for Personal Computing. But this one from developer Dave Smith offers another interesting take from a very different vantage point.

I wrote about Apple's device on the blog last week, but the post mostly focused on Mark Zuckerberg's reaction to the announcement (link below). I think my impressions were clearer when I replied to Richard in the comments section. Here's an excerpt:

...no one's going to wear this at the dinner table, or on movie night with the family. It's ridiculous. Not in its current form and not for a long time. 3D video capture will eventually come to the iPhone— no one will be crawling around a birthday party looking like an alien bug about to devour kids.

But the core vision imho is simpler and much less invasive: I really see this as a computing device, one that will replace traditional displays, and change our relationship to data as profoundly as the mouse did. More so. We will no longer be limited by office or studio space. We will no longer be constrained by a rectangular box, or two, or three, on a desk—imagine a mixing board that you can sweep to the side and replace with a score where each note can be zoomed in and manipulated through multi-gestures and glances. We do this now, on a screen, with a mouse or multi-touch, but the screen and input devices won't matter anymore. Where we are, won't matter anymore.

That's what I saw when the room was magically replaced by a lake, or a desert, or movie theatre: Spatial Computing will lift the constraints of physical space. We're about to move from a graphical user interface to a living user interface. That, for me, is the revolution.

Between AI technology and this, our world might just be unrecognizable ten years from now. Elation and uncertainty indeed.
