Hi Subscriber First Name, If you read yesterday’s post RE the release of Capture One for iPad (link below), then you know I’m a little disappointed. A conversation followed, soon after publication, on the 1EYE Society Slack channel. Judging from this and other reactions I’ve seen on the interwebs, it seems I’m not the only one taken aback by this rollout, and the C1 team’s subsequent explanations. So I followed-up on Slack today, and this is part of what I wrote: “This morning, with the dust settling, I’m sitting at my Mac and I can’t really imagine going back to a world without layers, custom keyboard shortcuts and multiple workspaces. But I still feel like the team behind C1 is seriously struggling with who they want to be. They knew, once upon a time, then they followed the lure of disgruntled LR users and changed course. But the truth is, they don’t have the means to go against Adobe. They can’t have it both ways and they can’t pretend the competition doesn’t exist. They’ve also slowly priced themselves into another category, without adding the features to justify it. No amount of explaining can remove those facts from the equation... ...I was already underwhelmed by the last major update, as most of you here know. I even downloaded LR again—and hated it. But I may revisit this. It may lead me to the same decision. It may not.”
To be clear, I really haven’t decided anything yet. All the reasons that lead to me leave Adobe are still just as valid as they were. What’s changed, however, is 1) Capture One’s price since I moved and 2) a clearer picture of the ecosystem they intend to build and how they plan to monetize it. This is, in my opinion, a blunder. And one that follows a lot of other blunders in the last two years (I’m looking at you export tool). I won’t get into the details of their past affiliate program, but let’s just say they didn’t earn much respect or good will with the way they handled that either. For fun, I did some digging on the blog: I seem to be running on five-year cycles when it comes to DAM apps. The Capture One transition wasn’t as clean as the one from Aperture to LR, but this would be year four or five, depending on where I place the cutoff point. I have until December to decide...
