Hey Subscriber First Name,

With the return of school comes the usual reassessment of tech, and the shuffling of gear in our household. This year, however, laptops were needed. So, my trusty M1 MacBook Air has finally left its desktop to experience the freewheeling life of a CEGEP art student.

As for me, I'm now on a stock M2 Pro Mac Mini. It's been a smooth transition, except for Time Machine issues: the migration went fine, but TM completely stopped working afterwards. The settings won't even load anymore, which is…bonkers. I trashed the preferences, even re-installed the OS, nothing works. So that's an obvious PITA, but otherwise, I'm very happy with the new machine. More ports provide a much cleaner setup too, which is always nice.

It also means that, despite what I wrote last winter about an eventual Mac-only lineup (These Traces 075), I'm sticking to the iPad Pro as my mobile solution. And I now fully accept its nature as a satellite to my desktop. The days of waiting on an iPadOS revolution are behind me. I'm not interested in an M1 model either, and I may even downsize when the time comes to replace this one.

The first post below, from Jason Snell, seems to echo those feelings and frankly, I'm not surprised: I think many of us (iPad as main device folks) are reaching a similar conclusion: Apple isn't coming to the party.

The iPad remains a hugely important device in my daily life—but focus has definitely shifted. I’m now using it for what it CAN do, not what it COULD.
