I was reading about Nikon’s new Z fc camera yesterday: it’s lovely. Let’s face it, it’s basically everything I already enjoy about my Fujifilm bodies—the physical dials, the look, and the entire “slow” philosophy behind those designs. They even went so far as to hide the LCD, just like on the X-Pro3; now that’s ballsy. It’s also...late? It makes their marketing a bit surreal—like a company waxing poetic about a revolutionary touchscreen phone!…In 2021. (1) Regardless: for Nikon shooters, this looks like a fun camera, which is all that matters. I did, however, take a peek at the comments section below the post, and discovered the issue of the day: IBIS. Apparently, any new camera without IBIS is a non-starter. Unusable. The Horror. How dare they. I’m shooting a loaner GFX 100S these days, the first camera I’ve ever used that includes IBIS, and it’s certainly impressive. It makes some shots possible that would’ve been difficult otherwise. It adds a sense of security to handheld operations. Built-in stabilization is indeed very useful, but…a necessity? For video, I’m inclined to say yes. And yet, I still manage to film everything with an X-T3. I use OIS lenses if I can, but since I much prefer the look of primes, I also use a tripod with a fluid head, and practice my moves. I shoot within the possibilities. I invent ways around the limitations. Technology expands those possibilities and will always be welcome. But when I read infuriated comments about this or that missing feature, I can’t help thinking how spoiled rotten we’ve become. Our gear is magical, period. Most of us barely scratch the potential of what we already own. Alright, it’s time for my breathing exercises…that GFX 100S won’t be around for long. Oh, the Horror ;) On to this week’s links... I do remember the Nikon DF. I think they could’ve expanded on the legacy approach, instead of letting a decade pass them by.
