We don't go home just yet; we stop in Maricourt where the girls are staying with their grandparents. This was meant to be a weekend family gathering but circumstances have changed and it's just us — the weary travellers, the kids and my in-laws. I'm beat, my mind still buzzing from the steady hum of cars, down a highway that never seemed to end. I fall asleep seconds after closing my eyes...

On Sunday we do Sunday things: we take a walk through the forest, we tidy up the car, we sit and daydream and drink coffee. Before this day ends we'll drive past The Horse, erect and proud and silent against thunderclouds. And we'll know we're finally home.
