catching up - on a monday morning

It is freeeezing this morning. First day of actual, honest to goodness cold — which for these parts is pretty late in the season. in fact, we had an argument about that with our 8 year old son: turns out he’s now apparently too cool for a winter coat. A glimpse of teen years to come I guess. Still had to wear it though… He was not happy. O the joys of parenting…
But then there are moments like these, a few minutes later:

And you pretty much forget some of the downsides. This is life after all: never perfect but damn...

I’ve been pretty busy these past weeks and haven’t had time to blog quite as much, so I hope you’ll forgive the slower pace around here.
I had a great gig saturday night, shooting an art show at MTL Tattoo on St-Denis street in Montreal. Great music, great people and great artwork. What more can you ask for? The room was the requisite dark and moody but I’m extremely happy with the results. I was going for cinematic and I think it sorta worked out alright. Heck, Chaplin showed up…
I’ve also been using a new projection setup in my studio, all powered from an iPad. Man, it seriously rocks. I’ll be posting about that later this week.
The coffee’s good this morning.
Monday, monday…

In case anyone's wondering: for the art show I used either an SB-900 or 800 on camera to bounce flash off the walls or ceiling, depending on what I was shooting. Both were fully zoomed to get as much directional light as possible. Switching between TTL and manual. Didn't have any wireless flashes set-up.

You have great skills in photography. You know well how to choose your subjects. I wish I could do that too. PS. You have a lovely daughter.
Thanks Lance :)
Really nice work. I've been following your blog for a while now as I've been slowly coming up to speed with my own X100. Very inspirational and just wonderful images. Thank you. Question on this series. You tagged it under D300 and X100. Do I take it that the comment re: using shoe mounted Nikon speedlights applies to both camera bodies? If so - if you have accumulated any "Do"s and "Dont"s it would be great if you could share them with us. Maybe as a future post?
@CJ: I'm thinking of writing an update about the way I'm using the X100 almost 9 months into it so I'll certainly take that into consideration.
I tagged the post with both D300 and X100 because the first pics (of my daughter) are from the Fuji, while the art show assignment shots were taken with the Nikon. So I was in fact referring to the D300 when I mentioned the speedlight.
However: you could absolutely use a speedlight in the same way on your X100. But manually — no TTL. I've written about the camera's flash capabilities in a previous article. It's an impressive little machine that can manage high-speed sync with studio strobes that the Nikon can't even approach.
Thanks for the feedback :)
